We are welcoming Ramadhan next week.
Ramadhan always reminisces my childhood living with grandmother. She cooks lots of dishes including sweet and even savory desserts. Although I ate the main dish including rice, chicken (sometimes more than 1 type of chicken dish) and without vegetables, I can still fill my belly with desserts and iced drinks. I will feel very full afterwards and went to pray around 8-ish. Of course…no time for terawih and grandmother hardly say a thing.
If I were lucky enough mother and father brought back some firecrackers during weekends. After prayer we will be very busy lighting the firecrackers in front of the house. Sometimes I skipped for a minute or two just to eat once more. I don’t remember about the others but I will be glued in front of the tv with a plate or bowl on my lap and continue eating.
Of course I did not miss my sahur. I had rice and other side dishes in addition to fried noodles, more desserts and fruits (pieces of watermelon soaked in sugar and chilled in the fridge!). Sometimes I even had bread and margarine with sugar (more sugar!) At that age health is not a concern. What’s important is I do not fall sick.
But now everything IS about health. We all need to stay healthy during Ramadhan. I guess old age has taken its toll on me.
